Seasonal timing

The median first frost is around November 7, and a discharge line left running across open ground freezes solid, which backs water up into the pit the pump is supposed to empty.

Common questions

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job and how bad the problem is. That is why the first step is a phone call. Describe the problem and get your free estimate on the phone, with upfront pricing.

Will I talk to a real person?

Yes, you will.

Do I need to fill out a form?

No forms and no waiting on emailed quotes. One phone call is all it takes.

Can I get help at night or on a weekend?

We have plumbers ready to help families in the community 24/7, but moment-to-moment availability depends on demand. Call to find out how soon we can service your home.

Should I wait to call?

You already know that plumbing problems don't go away on their own. And waiting just increases the risks to your house. Plumbers see this hesitation all the time. Instead of regretting not calling earlier, just make that 2-minute call now and get your free estimate.

People also ask

How do I test a sump pump before I need it?

Pour water into the pit until the float rises and confirm the pump starts, moves water and shuts off cleanly. Do it before wet weather, not during. A pump that hums without pumping usually has a stuck impeller or a jammed float.

Why does the pump run constantly in dry weather?

Either the check valve is letting discharged water fall back into the pit, or groundwater is entering steadily from a source that hasn't changed. Constant cycling shortens pump life quickly. It's worth diagnosing rather than waiting.

Does the discharge line need anything special in winter?

It needs to keep draining rather than holding water where it can freeze, which usually means slope and a proper termination away from the house. A frozen discharge makes the pump useless. Checking it before the cold sets in is straightforward.

Is a battery backup pump worth having?

In a house where water intrusion is a known problem, it covers the case where the power goes out during the exact storm you need the pump for. It's a second pump, not a replacement for maintaining the first. Sizing depends on how much water the pit actually takes.
