Burst Pipe
Close the main valve first, before anything else, because a broken line under pressure fills a wall cavity faster than most people expect.
When this becomes an emergency
- A steady hiss behind a wall that gets louder as pressure comes back after a cold night.
- Water running down the inside of a garage wall.
- The whole house dropping to a trickle at once.
- Ice on the outside of a hose bib with nothing coming out of the tap it feeds.
What a pro does
Central Arkansas gets its burst pipes in a particular pattern, and a plumber who works here knows where to start looking. An ice storm rolls through, temperatures sit below freezing for two or three days, then power goes out in the hill country west of Little Rock and the house stops heating itself. The lines that fail are the ones with no warm air on them: a run through an unheated garage, a hose bib on a north wall, supply piping in an attic where the insulation sits under it rather than over it. Once the main is closed, the search follows the water back. In slab houses that often means opening a small area of drywall at the coldest exterior wall in the house. The damaged section comes out and gets rejoined in the same material it was, since a mixed joint made in a hurry is next winter's leak. Then pressure goes back on with somebody watching the meter, because a freeze bad enough to split one line has usually stressed several, and the second one shows up an hour later.
