When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

There's a real difference between opening a drain and cleaning one, and it changes what the plumber brings to the door. A cable bores a passage through a blockage, which restores flow that afternoon and leaves the buildup on the pipe wall exactly where it was. Hydro-jetting scours that wall with pressurized water and takes the line back toward the diameter it was built with. Which one is right depends on the pipe. A good deal of housing in central Arkansas from the 1950s through the 1970s went in with cast iron inside and clay outside, and both of those develop rough interiors that hold material. Newer subdivisions out toward Bryant and Cabot run plastic, which stays smooth but is unforgiving about grade, so a plastic line that has settled in expansive clay traps waste in the low spot instead of on the walls. Camera work afterward is the part that earns its keep, because a freshly cleaned pipe is the only time you can actually read its condition. Scale, roots, offsets and standing water all show up plainly then.

Frequently asked questions

There's no fixed interval that suits every house. A kitchen line in a busy household with old cast iron might want attention every couple of years, while a newer plastic run with a good fall can go a long time untouched. What the camera shows is a better guide than a calendar.
On a line that's already cracked or badly corroded it can open up a weak spot, which is one reason a plumber inspects before choosing pressure. That's a diagnosis, not a reason to avoid the tool. Where the pipe is sound, jetting is the gentler option because nothing metal is spinning against the wall.
Often it does, because the smell usually comes from the film coating the pipe rather than from anything in the trap. Stripping that layer removes what's feeding it. A dry trap or a blocked vent gives off a similar odor, so those get checked too.
That's the cheaper end of this. A line that's narrowing gives months of warning, and dealing with it on an ordinary weekday is a much smaller job than dealing with a full backup during an ice storm when nobody can get down the hill.
